Magnolia (Remix)

A few months ago, I had a painting in my studio that no longer sparked joy. Instead of thanking it for being a part of my life and then discarding it a la Marie Kondo, I used an exacto blade to cut it off the stretcher bars.

Inspired by 1970s surf posters, I sliced flowing shapes and pasted them onto a fresh new canvas while listening to the remix of Rihanna’s “Kiss It Better” by Four Tet. The beat of this track dictated the initial strokes of paint upon this newly constructed canvas and my image grew into a balletic magnolia flower. We can create art by asking, “How can this be better?” Sometimes a dated concept just needs an editing eye and a fresh concept.

I’ve included a photo of the original painting being cut off the stretcher bars.
